Exercise as Medicine

The ancient philosopher Hippocrates wrote, ‘‘eating alone will not keep a man well; he must also take exercise. For food and exercise work together to produce health”.

The Western medical notion is that we have the ability to improve our health through our own actions, for example, by eating right, breathing fresh air, and getting enough sleep and exercise. It might be tempting to search for a magic pill which will grant us long life and health, but the reality is that good health is often well within our grasp.

The basis of Hippocrates theory were six things:

Air

Sufficient Exercise

Diet

Excretions & Retentions

Sufficient Rest

Passions of the Mind

Now you might think this is a (very) old-fashioned notion however the benefits of regular exercise is well documented. Reframing exercise as “medicine” takes it a step further, acknowledging the very real improvements gained to health and wellbeing through exercise.
